Shanon Bates moves to a Sylvanvale Individual Apartment Living (IAL) home, wasn’t just about gaining independence.
Born with Spina Bifida, and having had 95 operations throughout his life, Shanon says his move to Woolooware Bay six weeks ago has been a great experience. “Sylvanvale’s support has been a cut above the rest,” he says. “They think outside the box, take initiative, and continuously provide quality service. They’re all over it.”
A home with support and independence
After a change in circumstances, Shanon found himself without a permanent home. Thanks to his strong community connections, he could stay at Quest Cronulla for six months. This arrangement was made possible by owner Jim Worthington. Finally securing his Sylvanvale-supported IAL apartment was a relief.
What is Individual Apartment living?
Sylvanvale IAL provides shared support for tenants in Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). This allows people to live independently with the peace of mind that support is always available.
This can include:
- Unplanned support: Up to 2 hours daily, available 24/7, year-round.
- Collective support: Daily planned support shared with other tenants in the same complex
- Flexible support: Individual planned support tailored to resident needs.
The modern, accessible facilities at Woolooware Bay have made life easier for Shanon. He loves features like the adjustable shirt rail that pulls down to chest height, wheelchair-friendly spaces, and his car space. “The builders even asked for my input—and listened,” he shares.
Navigating the NDIS
Shanon understands how tricky the NDIS can be to navigate. Thanks to his experience as a support coordinator, he’s learned a few tips: “Find a support coordinator who has your back. Don’t take no for an answer and never settle for less than great services”.
Having switched providers before, Shanon believes people who align their values with their work are more likely to enjoy it, which benefits everyone. He also stresses the importance of staying proactive and asking questions. “NDIS support is there for a reason—use it. Having a great team around you makes all the difference,” he says.
The role of Sylvanvale
From the first enquiry to moving in and beyond, Sylvanvale has been with Shanon every step of the way. While he’s quite independent, knowing he can call for help through the iPad, buzzers, or a phone call gives him peace of mind.
“Three weeks after I moved in, I got stung by a wasp at night. It was such a relief to have support a button away,” he says.
Shanon is grateful for Sylvanvale’s onsite team, led by Sabian Hibbins, who makes his house feel like home. From handling challenges to helping him host friends, their support matters.
Sabian says, “My team and I support IAL residents to live independently, with help when it’s needed. I love helping people feel at home and building meaningful connections with great individuals like Shanon.”
Living at Woolooware Bay
AccessAccom is a leading provider of premium Specialist Disability Accommodation. They own all the IAL apartments in this complex. Shanon loves his new home—a modern, accessible two-bedroom apartment with a view. Conveniently located above a shopping complex, it has a pool, communal areas, automated entry, and balcony doors. As a Sharks fan, Shanon is thrilled the stadium is a short roll away, and Cronulla’s attractions are close by.
A fresh start with big plans
With stable housing, Shanon is focused on his business, Push The Limit. He runs workshops to shift attitudes towards people living with disability, for schools, corporates and communities.
Shanon’s message is clear and powerful: “Show up and push limits every day.” As the first person to push the Bathurst 1000 track in his wheelchair, one of many accolades, he is proof the sky can be the limit.
Shanon’s workshops include anti-bullying, accountability, diversity, inclusion, resilience, and perspective. He shows that people living with disability are capable, valuable members of society.
Living at Woolooware Bay gives Shanon the stability to chase his goals while staying active in his community.
Advice for others
For those considering assisted living, Shanon offers practical encouragement. “There’s a variety of accommodation available. Be proactive, speak with NDIS representatives, and connect with a service provider like Sylvanvale.”
