International Day of People with Disability Celebrations

International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD) is observed on 3 December each year. It provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate and raise awareness of people with disability.

At Sylvanvale, we were excited to recognise this important time in many ways.

Abilities Unleashed

Some of the people we support participated in Abilities Unleashed at Menai on Monday 4 December 2023. The event gave them the opportunity to try a variety of different sports, including wheelchair NRL. By all accounts they had a great time!

Hosted by Disability Sports Australia in partnership with Sutherland Shire Council, the event was part of council’s International Day of People with Disability celebrations.

Mikarie Child Care Centre Activities

The children at Mikarie Child Care Centre engaged in activities throughout the week to mark IDPWD. As part of this, they experienced sensory quiet time, turning the main room lights out to allow for the room to be adjusted for the children with sensory overload and sensory processing difficulties. They also used Christmas lights and sensory toys to create a sensory experience.

As a centre that welcomes children with and without disability in one setting, Mikarie is a great example of what true inclusion looks like every day.

Celebrations at our Hubs

At our Sutherland Community Hub, Garden House, Caringbah Craft Centre and Multi-Purpose Centre, the participants enjoyed special celebrations to mark the important day.
