Mikarie Kids Sign for International Day of Sign Languages

International Day of Sign Languages

International Day of Sign Languages is celebrated annually across the world on 23 September every year, along with International Week of the Deaf.

To celebrate this important day, the children at Mikarie Child Care Centre recently signed the ‘Welcome Song’ In English and Dharug. You can watch them sign by clicking on the following video.

The purpose of International Day of Sign Languages is to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realisation of the human rights of people who are deaf. The International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities makes it clear that sign languages are equal in status to spoken languages.

Mikarie is an inclusive, multi-award winning long day care centre situated in a tranquil, leafy location in convenient Kirrawee. It is one of the few childcare centres in the Sutherland Shire that provides early education and quality care to children with and without a disability in one setting. The centre embraces and celebrates all cultures and diversity, and Mikarie children learn social inclusion and that inside we’re all the same.
